Past Lectures
June 24, 2004
Murray Borders
We had our first discussion for our Cultural Influences of Tolkien series.
Thank you to all who supported this event...there were approximately forty LOTR fans who participated. Each person received handouts with passages of Beowulf in Old English and Tolkien's translation of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. Dr. Don Chapman discussed the theory of courage in Tolkien's works. He made comparisons of the Old English and Modern script, showing how Tolkien's love of language and story influenced his writing.
Attendees received a gift at the end of the lecture. Thank you to all who made the event a great success. If you missed this lecture, please join us next month, July 29, when Dr. Steven Walker will present our next lecture.

Murray Borders
Dr. Steven Walker, BYU professor of English presented his ideas on why Tolkien’s modern mythology “The Lord of the Rings” has such an impact on society. He related that Tolkien gave just enough information in his stories to paint a visual picture, yet at the same time leaves enough out that readers are drawn into the stories and are allowed to create their own images within that world. Dr. Walker concluded his lecture with a drawing assignment where each participant drew their version of a Hobbit. A small gift was awarded to each attendee at the conclusion. Thank you Dr. Walker for talking the time to share your talents and knowledge!
